Best Practices in Online and Remote Learning

Jeff Dugan

Best practices in online and remote learning are changing - and they are a catalyst for transition. As we develop our practices in Brightspace, it is critical to stay curious and open to new practices. Curiosity and a critical analysis is far better than looking at any past best practices (or any practice in this new post-pandemic educational environment).

Podcasting in the Classroom

Nick Fargnoli

This session is an introductory presentation for anyone who wants to learn more about using podcasts in their classrooms. While this session will touch on everything from using podcasts as “texts” to creating podcasts as assessments, we will not be actually creating any podcasts in this session. Instead, we will be discussing the importance of using relevant "texts," analyzing affordances of digital media, and thinking about ways to help our students develop critical media literacy skills--all while also increasing engagement in classrooms.

Seamless Integration of Google Docs into Brightspace

Dave Ghidiu

This session explores ways to radically reduce the amount of time you spend every semester grappling with the small updates to your course. Check out super-secret hacks that can increase your productivity (using the "Set-and-Forget" methodology) as well as some sick Brightspace tricks that provide seamless (and meaningful) experiences for your students.

Transformative Texts, Enduring Questions, and the FLCC Values.

Curt Nehring Bliss

This session will invite participants to consider how the texts we select and the questions we pose in our classrooms can connect to, and support, the four values at the heart of our Learning Framework. Curt will also introduce the Cornerstone: Learning for Living  grant from the Teagle Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Milton Johnson and Curt recently submitted a proposal for a planning grant, and will be notified mid-March ’23 if the proposal is accepted. This session will build on the session Curt faciltated last year called “Reenvisioning the FLCC Learning Framework through Transformative Texts and Enduring Questions” when they were in the early stages of thinking about the grant.

Myths of Teaching and Learning

Dave Ghidiu

This is an encore presentation from a previous professional development day.

Are you right-brained or left-brained? What learning style is your best? Are you good at multitasking?

These questions are pervasive in education but are the wrong questions. This session looks at common myths, misunderstandings, and teaching strategies backed by science.
